HL surface is the most common surface among stainless steel surfaces. It is also usually called brushed plate or hairline plate. Hairline plate means a brushed plate formed by hitting hair-like filaments on the surface of stainless steel.

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel decreases with the increase of carbon content. Therefore, the carbon content of most stainless steel is low, with a maximum of no more than 1.2%. The Wc (carbon content) of some steels is even lower than 0.03% (such as 00Cr12 ). The main alloying element in stainless steel is Cr (chromium).

The final operation after fabrication or heat treatment is cleaning to remove surface contamination and restore corrosion resistance of the exposed surfaces. Degreasing to remove cutting oils, grease, crayon markings, fingerprints, dirt, grime and other organic residues is the first step.
